Youth Artists paint Black History Mural on Display at Soul on Ice Exhibit
YWCA youth included in largest MN art exhibit on black culture

WHAT:
The work of 8 YWCA youth artists has been selected for The Soap Factory exhibit Soul on Ice: Understanding the value and depth of Black Culture. This will be the largest art exhibition on black culture by Minnesota artists. The youth mural, on the topic of Black History, will be shown along with the work of 100 other Minnesota artists.

The title of the exhibit is inspired by author and activist Eldridge Cleaver's book "Soul on Ice," which reflects on the turbulent times of the civil rights movement.

The Black History mural and two others were created as part of a Juxtaposition Arts summer artist residency at YWCA of Minneapolis Camp Kickin' It 2007.

WHY:
The YWCA of Minneapolis serves more than 1,500 urban youth ages 6-18 annually. In 2007, 68 percent were girls, 83 percent were from low-income households and 92 percent were youth of color. YWCA youth programs promote academic success, positive decision-making, leadership skills, and community involvement. Programming supports youth in Leading, Learning and Creating Change.

The YWCA Early Childhood Education Programs serve more than 530 infants, toddlers, pre-school and school-age children annually.
