Swim for Change: YWCA Channel Challenge
Congratulations to the YWCA Channel Challenge Swimmers!
On July 30th, the YWCA Channel Challenge relay teams successfully crossed the English Channel - a 21 mile stretch across the busiest shipping seaway in the world. The teams, comprised of eight youth and five adults, were the first teams of Minnesotans to accomplish this feat. Their coach Dave Cameron made his own double-crossing attempt on August 7th, and completed a single-crossing from England to France before calling-off the return swim due to shoulder soreness.
The event is part of the YWCA of Minneapolis' Swim for a Change campaign that is increasing
awareness of disparities in access to swimming among communities of color in Minnesota.
The swimmers have raised more than $70,000 to support YWCA of Minneapolis programs that provide
swimming opportunities for underrepresented children and youth including swim lessons, swim team
scholarships and lifeguard training courses.
