Discovery Leaderhip Program Partner
Location: Girls and Youth
Hours: Afternoons, October-May
Summary:
To partner with other women and girls in hands-on-learning about female leadership in the community. Girls and women engage in dialogue around the history of female leadership, issues of racism and privilege, and celebrate themselves as leaders. Girls and women will work together to implement a social action project that will create positive change in their community.
Outline of Volunteer's Responsibilities/Tasks::
The Discovery Leadership approach is providing a pro-girl/pro-woman environment, hands-on learning environment for everyone, facilitating learning that is intentional and compensatory. As such, the volunteer will:
- Serve as a positive role model for girls
- Work alongside girls to make positive change happen through a community action project
- Willingness to actively participate in discussions and activities about race, racism, stereotypes, and privilege
- Inspire girls to believe in themselves as leaders, to take themselves seriously as leaders, to understand their responsibilities as citizen leaders
- Lead and follow, sharing information and receiving information
- Participate in an overnight with other women and girls in the group as an opportunity to bond
- Participate in public celebration of your work
Qualifications:
- Ability to serve as a positive role model to girls
- Trustworthy
- Committed to program (must be able to attend every weekly gathering for school year program – also with the understanding that things do come up!)
- Willing to be an active participant in a variety of activities
Training/Supervision/Reporting:
On-the-job training and supervision will be provided by Youth Group Facilitator
Commitment:
- Attend all group meetings once a week (days vary by site)
- Participate in entire 9 month program (October – May)
- Available for one overnight with group scheduled during the program
Outcome/Goals:
To create a positive, safe environment for girls to learn about, observe and experience leadership to help them make a difference for themselves and in their community.
