Girl Power Program Partner

Location: Girls and Youth
Hours: 3-6 pm weekdays, October-May

Summary:
To partner with a group of girls and a YWCA Youth Counselor in hands-on-learning around math and science and careers in these fields. Also includes heightening girls’ sense of self-esteem and leadership.

Outline of Volunteer's Responsibilities/Tasks::
The Girl Power® approach is providing a pro-girl environment, hands-on learning environment for everyone, facilitating learning that is intentional and compensatory. As such, the volunteer will:

  • Serve as a positive role model for girls
  • Work alongside girls to make positive change happen
  • Inspire girls to believe in themselves as potential leaders in math, science and technology fields
  • Lead and follow, sharing and receiving information

Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or knowledge in the sciences
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for girls
  • Trustworthy
  • Commitment to 9-month program session
  • Willing to be an active participant in a variety of math, science and technology related activities and genuinely enjoy it!

Training/Supervision/Reporting:
On-the-job training and supervision provided by YWCA Youth Counselor.

Commitment:

  • Actively participate in either 9-month program (October –May)
  • Attend all group meetings (after school hours—typically anywhere from 3- 6pm) held once a week during program session

Outcome/Goals:
To create a positive, safe environment for girls to learn about, observe and experience science and math and related careers in order to inspire girls to believe in themselves as potential leaders in math and science fields, historically dominated by males.
