YWCA Minneapolis Contact Plus

Contact Plus

For more than 30 years, the YWCA's Contact Plus Program has been working with middle school and high school youth in the Minneapolis Public Schools. This comprehensive sexual health education program, in which the students meet in gender-specific or coed groups for discussions and activities, helps them learn about themselves, their relationships with others and how to assertively communicate and make well-informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and the impact of early pregnancy. The YWCA integrates proven curriculum into the program, including Making Proud Choices! for middle-school youth and Girls Inc.® Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy in girls groups.

Contact Plus Participants

In 2015 - 2016, Contact Plus served more than 200 students and 100% of participants reported not becoming pregnant or fathering a child during the ten-month program.

Strong Fast Fit at YWCA Minneapolis

Strong Fast Fit

YWCA Minneapolis' unique Strong Fast Fit program is dedicated to preventing childhood obesity and Type II Diabetes in culturally specific communities, serving youths ages 9 through 17. Youth meet twice a week for engaging classes designed to develop fitness and nutrition habits that support lifelong wellness. When healthy lifestyles are a family affair, youth are more successful. The program offers families fitness events, cooking and nutrition classes, and encourages regular use of the family memberships and the YWCA fitness facilities.

Strong Fast Fit Participants

In 2015-2016:

  • 99% of youth engaged in Moderate to High Level physical activity at least two times per week for thirty (30) minutes
  • 83% of regular participants reported making healthy food choices and an improved overall diet
  • 77 % of families increased use of Meal Planning and Healthy Eating

“I get to work out, be in the nutrition program and swim. I ran a one-mile race in February. I started off fast and then stopped and had to walk, but I finished and succeeded. I’ve learned how to be strong no matter how hard times get. I eat healthy foods, I’m more energetic, and I’m not a couch potato anymore. I feel a lot better about myself since joining Strong Fast Fit at the YWCA.”
