Not Just a Staff Member: Nina's Story

May 24, 2022

We recently learned more about our incredible volunteer coordinator and fitness member, Nina Salah. In this Q&A, she tells us how she became a staff member, what she likes most about visiting our fitness centers and her advice for staying active. Read Nina's story below!

When did you first become a member?

I became a member when I first started working here back in 2016. I joined YWCA Minneapolis because I believe in their mission to eliminate racism, empower women and girls, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. I'm a morning person so working out first thing in the morning made the most sense to me. On the occasions I oversleep, I work out on my lunch break.

What do you like most about exercising with us?

Since I work with YWCA Minneapolis, it allows me the flexibility and convenience to work out on my lunch break. It's wonderful seeing all the familiar faces! My favorite parts about being a member are the staff, members and the community!

Do you have any advice for others on staying healthy and active?

Get in the habit as soon as possible, don't let distractions derail your routine and try different workouts! I love YWCA's fitnesses classes because I find them to be easier for my routine. I have also learned so much from the instructors over the years. This knowledge was invaluable when I was forced to exercise on my own away from YWCA during the COVID-19 closures. Don't forget the basics — you can never do too much stretch and balance work!

A Mission Fueled By Volunteers

Finally, the core of my role with YWCA is volunteer recruitment. YWCA Minneapolis is an organization with a 130-year history of passionate advocacy and equity-centered programs focused on racial justice, early childhood education, youth development and wellness. Our work is fueled by the people who believe in our mission and put their values into action. Each year, people like you give 14,900+ volunteer hours to advance our mission and make our life-changing programs and events happen.Join our movement and make a difference!
