Swimming Lessons & Aquatics Training

Despite what some may think, it’s never too late — or too early — to learn how to swim. YWCA Minneapolis offers convenient, high-quality swimming and aquatics training for all ages, from infant to adult. Our selection of classes, swim teams and safety courses allows you to choose an option that works for you or your child. In all of our classes, our trained instructors help participants achieve greater confidence and skill in the water.

YWCA Minneapolis offers classes year-round, with sessions starting in winter, spring, summer and fall. Take some time to peruse our available lessons and determine which option best suits your needs.

Group Swim Lessons

We’re proud to offer a wide range of YWCA swimming classes at our Uptown and Midtown locations. Group lessons provide a safe, friendly environment in which infants, children or adults can learn to swim, improve their existing abilities and gain confidence in the water. Younger swimmers work on becoming comfortable in the pool, developing basic skills and eventually swimming independently.

Adults who want to overcome a fear of water or improve their swim skills develop basic technique in our Adult Beginner class. More experienced adult swimmers improve endurance and stroke technique in our Adult Advanced class. Whether your goal is to work on your stroke or ease your 6-month-old into the water, we have a group lesson to help.

Private & Semi-Private Swim Lessons

Private swim lessons provide clients with exceptional one-on-one training in the pool, with a qualified instructor at their side. Individual attention can benefit children requiring some extra help and elite swimmers looking to develop race strategies for competitions. YWCA Minneapolis offers both private and semi-private lessons to fit a variety of schedules and unique needs. Work with a skilled instructor to learn at your own pace and make the most of your lesson time, or consider taking a semi-private lesson alongside one or two friends of similar skill.

Masters Swim Team

In addition to our youth swimming offerings, YWCA Minneapolis boasts our own masters swim program, which welcomes swimmers from ages 18 to 80. Practices cover a variety of topics, from triathlon training to stroke development. We even offer a class specifically for our senior masters!

If you can comfortably swim 200 yards of freestyle and are a member of United States Masters Swimming, YWCA’s masters swim team is for you. Signing up for the team gives you access to our award-winning coaching team and over 15 hours of practice options each week at our YWCA Downtown, Midtown and Uptown locations.

Total Immersion Swimming

Swimmers of all abilities can benefit from Total Immersion (TI) swimming instruction, a learning technique that utilizes drills and stroke analysis to help a swimmer understand his or her unique strengths and identify areas for improvement. With the help of above and underwater video equipment, skilled TI coaches work with participants to improve speed and endurance, refine stroke technique and reduce the risk of injuries during competition. TI also helps new and progressing swimmers overcome training blocks and see improvement in overall form. YWCA Minneapolis is the sole provider of this unique teaching method in the state of Minnesota.

Otters Youth Swim Team

We encourage kids of all ages to give competitive youth swimming a go by trying out for our Otters Swim Team. Beginning and advanced swimmers alike improve their skills in a supportive environment complete with flexible practice schedules at our Uptown and Midtown locations. Our dedicated coaches are passionate about helping Otters become confident individuals in and out of the water. Swimmers will be placed in groups corresponding to their age and abilities, where they learn key skills like good sportsmanship and healthy nutrition habits.

Lifeguard & CPR Safety Courses

Emergencies can happen at any time, so it is best to be prepared. Take advantage of one of our many first aid and safety training classes to ensure you are ready and able to act if an emergency situation does arise. Our American Red Cross-certified instructors provide class participants with essential lifesaving skills like CPR and First Aid. YWCA Minneapolis also offers lifeguarding courses to prepare participants for water emergencies.
