YWCA Minneapolis Partners with One Good Deed on Clothing and Cold-Weather Gear Drive

A simple act of kindness can help kids, women and families stay warm through the long winter. YWCA Minneapolis is partnering with One Good Deed to combine the organization’s annual Children’s Centers winter clothing drive with One Good Deed’s Scarf Bombing campaign. Together, they aim to collect clothing and cold-weather gear for community members in need this winter. The collection drive runs Nov. 1–Dec. 15.

“Our winter clothing drive is an annual tradition. We serve families from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds, and the drive provides an opportunity to swap clothing as little ones grow,” said Shelley Carthen Watson, president and CEO of YWCA Minneapolis. “We’re excited for this partnership because it gives our community of donors, parents and fitness members another way to make a positive impact for families in our community.”

Traditionally, YWCA Minneapolis collects new and gently used children’s clothing for its five Children’s Centers in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Through this expanded partnership, donations of winter gear, blankets, sleeping bags and hand or foot warmers will also be accepted. Community members are invited to drop off items at YWCA Minneapolis Children’s Centers or YWCA Midtown.

“We often serve as a bridge between organizations,” said Michelle Christensen, founder of One Good Deed. “We’ve worked with YWCA Minneapolis Children’s Centers in the past, delivering book libraries and lunches. We’re excited to see how big a ripple of kindness we can create by collecting items together.”

For the past nine years, One Good Deed has been building kinder communities—one good deed at a time. Its annual Scarf Bombing event collects new, gently used and handmade items for distribution to unhoused families in neighborhood parks. Last year, the organization collected 715 bags of winter gear. This year’s event will take place Sunday, Jan. 4, in five Minneapolis and St. Paul parks.

About One Good Deed

One Good Deed began when a small group of neighborhood moms turned their monthly get-togethers into opportunities to give back. What started with building little libraries inspired by founder Michelle Christensen’s passion for youth literacy has grown into a thriving volunteer network spreading kindness across the Twin Cities.

Its signature event, the annual Scarf Bombing, began with a handful of donated gloves and has evolved into a large community effort providing warm winter items to those in need each January. Throughout the year, One Good Deed hosts monthly kindness projects that bring people together, foster friendship and strengthen community.
